Abstract

The status of the Qur'an and the Ahl al-Bayt-two enduring legacies of the Prophet (peace be upon him)-and the importance of adherence to them to avoid deviation are well established among Muslims. The Prophet is introduced in the Qur’an as an exemplary model (uswatun ḥasanah), and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), as his successors, are likewise seen as guides. Their words and actions are firmly grounded in the Qur’an, and they referred to it in diverse ways, which this study seeks to examine and explain. This descriptive-analytical study aims to identify the various modes of Qur’anic referencing employed by the Infallibles and to clarify how these methods contributed to the promotion of Qur’anic culture in society. The Infallibles referenced both the outward meanings of the Qur’an (including prohibitions, general and specific statements, implications, and exceptions) and its deeper dimensions. In some cases, they generalized Qur’anic content or referred to all verses concerning a specific theme. The findings show that the Ahl al-Bayt referenced the Qur’an through preliminary invocation, dialectical argumentation, and in response to questions. The abundance and variety of such references reflect a deliberate cultural strategy to normalize Qur’anic engagement among the Shiʿa. A clear explanation of this tradition can inspire followers of the Ahl al-Bayt to emulate them by centering the Qur’an in their lives and substantiating their speech and actions with it.
